One of the most common questions we receive at SockCustom is: "How long does it take to get custom socks?" The answer depends on several factors, including your order size, design complexity, and whether you choose standard or rush production. In this guide, we break down the complete timeline so you can plan your project with confidence.
Rush Order: 2 Weeks
Need custom socks fast? Our rush order service delivers your custom socks in as little as 2 weeks from design approval to your doorstep. Rush production is available for an additional +$2/pair and prioritizes your order at every stage of the process.
The 2-week rush timeline assumes:
- Your design is approved within 24 hours
- Standard colors are selected (custom dyeing adds time)
- Order quantity is 500 pairs or fewer (larger orders may require additional time)
- Express air shipping is used (included in rush pricing)
Industry Average: 1–2 Months
It is worth noting that the industry average for custom sock production is 4–8 weeks, and some manufacturers quote 8–12 weeks during peak seasons. At SockCustom, we have optimized our production process to deliver in 3–4 weeks (or 2 weeks rush), making us one of the fastest custom sock suppliers in the industry.
SockCustom's 7-Step Process
Here is our complete production process, broken down step by step:
Step 1: Design & Mockup (1–3 Days)
After you submit your logo and design requirements, our team creates a digital mockup of your custom socks. You will receive your first mockup within 24 hours. We offer unlimited revisions at no extra charge, so you can tweak the design until it is perfect. Most clients approve their design within 1–3 days.
Step 2: Yarn Color Matching (2–3 Days)
Once the design is approved, our color specialists match your brand colors to yarn. We use the SanShan color matching system with over 150 pre-dyed yarn colors. If your brand requires a custom Pantone color that is not in our stock, custom yarn dyeing adds approximately 2–3 extra days.
Step 3: Pre-Production Sampling (Optional, +2 Weeks)
For clients who want to see and feel an exact production sample before committing to the full order, we offer a pre-production sample for $150. This adds approximately 2 weeks to the timeline. The sample is an exact replica of what your final socks will look and feel like, giving you complete confidence before bulk production begins.
Step 4: Bulk Production (Approximately 2 Weeks)
This is where the magic happens. Our 200-needle Jacquard knitting machines produce your custom socks to your exact specifications. Each sock goes through knitting, linking (closing the toe seam), and initial quality inspection. Production time varies slightly based on order size: 50–250 pairs typically complete in 7–10 days, while 500–1,000+ pairs may take 10–14 days.
Step 5: Boarding & Finishing (2–3 Days)
After knitting, socks go through a boarding process where they are stretched over foot-shaped forms and steamed to set their shape. This ensures consistent sizing and a crisp, professional appearance. Any custom packaging (header tags, belly wraps, gift boxes) is applied during this stage.
Step 6: Quality Control & Packaging (1–2 Days)
Every pair undergoes quality inspection before being packed for shipment. We check for correct design placement, color accuracy, stitching quality, and overall finish. Any pairs that do not meet our standards are rejected and remade.
Step 7: Air Delivery (1–2 Weeks)
Your finished socks are shipped via FedEx, DHL, or UPS air freight, depending on your location. Delivery times:
- North America: 5–7 business days
- Europe: 5–8 business days
- Asia Pacific: 3–5 business days
- Rest of World: 7–14 business days
All shipments include tracking and insurance. Sea freight is available for larger orders at a lower cost but adds 4–6 weeks to delivery time.
General Lead Time: 3–4 Weeks
For most standard orders, the complete timeline from design approval to delivery is 3–4 weeks. Here is a typical timeline:
- Week 1: Design finalization, yarn matching, and production preparation
- Week 2: Bulk knitting production
- Week 3: Boarding, finishing, quality control, and shipment dispatch
- Week 4: Air freight delivery to your address
Factors That Can Affect Timeline
Several factors can impact how long your custom socks take:
- Custom yarn dyeing: Adds 2–3 days if your exact color is not in our stock
- Pre-production sample: Adds approximately 2 weeks
- Custom packaging: Custom tags, sleeves, or gift boxes add 1–2 days
- Large order quantities: Orders over 1,000 pairs may require additional production time
- Complex designs: Intricate patterns with many colors take longer to knit
- Peak seasons: Holiday periods (October–December) may have slightly longer lead times due to high demand
Planning Your Order
To ensure your custom socks arrive when you need them, we recommend:
- For events and trade shows: Order at least 6 weeks in advance
- For holiday gifts: Order by early November for December delivery
- For weddings: Order 8 weeks before the wedding date
- For fundraising campaigns: Allow 6–8 weeks from order to delivery
Planning ahead ensures a smooth, stress-free experience and gives you plenty of time for design revisions and any unexpected delays.
